Pilot chullo is inspired by old-time pilot helmet. This winter hat takes the traditional Peru chullo shape and features pleated double knitting earflaps, bold braids seam and button closure under the chin.
Pilot chullo is worked from crown down in one piece.

Fit Head Circumference: 54-60 cm [21.25-23.5 inches]
SUGGESTED NEEDLES
5 mm [US 8] circular needles ( 40 or 60 cm [16 or 24 inches] )
6 mm [US 10] circular needles ( 40 or 60 cm [16 or 24 inches] )
OR required needle size to obtain gauge
5 mm [US 8] double-pointed needles (15 cm [6 inches] )
6 mm crochet hook - for braids seam
SIZE GUIDE
Pilot chullo is designed to have a regular fit with button closures under chin to secure the hat in place with earflaps staying close to ears. It doesn’t have a tightly fit crown.
KNITTING DENSITY
In double knitting using 5 mm [US 8] needles
15 sts x 26 rows = 10 x 10 cm [4 x 4 inches]
In garter stitch using 6 mm [US 10] needles
13 sts x 18 rows = 10 x 10 cm [4 x 4 inches]
SUGGESTED MATERIALS
200 gr. Aiayu, Mechera Handknit Yarn, 50 gr. / 50 m - Pure Natural
Knit the chullo with 1 strand of Mechera Handknit Yarn.
2 buttons: diam. approx. 1.75 cm [0.7 inches]
Yarn Alternatives
1 strand of any bulky (12 ply) yarn OR 2 strands of any sport (5 ply) to DK (8 ply) yarn holding together would be good options.
